An architecture student won first place as the Iraq Youth Commentator in the semi-final episode.
Written by hindStudent Ali Adnan, a fourth-year Urban Design student, secured first place as Iraq Youth Commentator in the competition broadcasted by Al-Rabaa Sports Channel as part of the Iraq Youth Commentator program, produced by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
The judging panel consisted of:
- Omani commentator Khalil Al-Balushi
- Tunisian analyst Hicham El-Gloussi
- Theater critic Dr. Jabbar Khimmat
Student Ali Adnan achieved a total of 69 points, qualifying him for the final episode.

Written by hindOn Thursday, February 6, 2025, the Department Council Meeting was held under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Abbas Ali Hamza, Head of the Department of Architecture, with the presence of assistant heads, branch heads, the department rapporteur, and the representative of the Iraqi Academics Syndicate.
The meeting focused on discussing student affairs, postgraduate studies, and reviewing the reports from the Architectural Design and Urban Design branches, as well as the examination committees.
The Department of Architecture's participation in the Second Edition of the 2025 Leadership Initiative, organized by the Continuing Education Center at the University of Technology.
Written by hindArchitect Ayat Ali Nafi participated in the Second Training Session of the 2025 Leadership Initiative, held at the Continuing Education Center at the University of Technology. This initiative was organized under the guidance of the Prime Minister’s office, with supervision from the University of Technology Presidency and the Scientific Assistant Office.
During the initiative, Architect Ayat Ali Nafi delivered lectures alongside several students, including graduates from the University of Technology and other universities. The course aimed to build an entrepreneurial community that supports youth and creative thinkers who aspire to turn their service-oriented project ideas into successful ventures. The training included guidance on preparing a comprehensive action plan and conducting a feasibility study for those projects.

The Department of Architecture wins the University of Technology Tennis Championship.

The achievement was under the supervision of Assistant Prof. Dr. Huda Mohammed Suleiman, the Department's Student Activities Coordinator.

A student from the Department of Architecture wins the Debate World Cup for Iraqi Universities.
Written by hindThird-year student Laith Ali Naeem was awarded Best Speaker as part of the University of Technology team, which secured first place in the 2nd edition of the Iraqi Universities Debate World Cup. The competition was organized by the International Academy for Leadership and Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, on Sunday, December 8, 2024.
The university's team was represented by a distinguished group of students under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Huda Mohammed Suleiman, the department’s activities coordinator. Laith Ali Naeem was recognized as the Best Speaker throughout the competition rounds, showcasing the academic, intellectual, and cultural excellence of University of Technology students, as well as their ability to engage in constructive dialogue and debate.

Discussion of the Master's Thesis Titled "The Impact of Environmental Treatments on the Sustainability of Green Open Spaces in Residential Complexes: A Case Study"

"The Impact of Environmental Treatments on the Sustainability of Green Open Spaces in Residential Complexes: A Case Study"
On Sunday, January 5, 2025, the master's thesis of Hajar Kamil Kareem, titled "The Impact of Environmental Treatments on the Sustainability of Green Open Spaces in Residential Complexes: A Case Study", was discussed.
The thesis focused on sustainable environmental treatments for green open spaces in residential complexes within hot and arid climates, providing the designer with flexibility in selecting the most crucial treatments to achieve environmental goals, in addition to other design aspects. The study aimed to provide flexibility in choosing among various environmental treatments that improve thermal comfort in open spaces in hot and dry climates while ensuring the sustainability of outdoor spaces in residential complexes.
To achieve this, the study proposed several treatments and design scenarios to improve the performance of outdoor spaces. These included 8 scenarios:
- Current situation scenario
- Master plan scenario
- Vegetation cover scenario
- Paving materials scenario
- Paving color scenario
- Water surface scenario
- Solar cells scenario
- Solar cells and vegetation cover scenario
These scenarios offer flexibility for the designer to choose the most suitable one for their design project, ensuring thermal efficiency and meeting other design requirements. A computational program (ENVI-met 5.5) was used to simulate environmental treatments for outdoor spaces and measure the environmental performance of various urban models. This allowed for comparing the climatic mitigation effects. Additionally, the PVsyst 7.4 software was used to simulate solar cell performance, considering direction, location, and energy production.
The study concluded several significant findings, including:
- Some environmental treatments helped improve thermal comfort, with results aligning with international standards. For example, the PET index reached a value of 8.68, the UTCL index was 7.41, the TA index was 7.04, and the PMV index was 1.68.

Architecture Department Students Attain an Honorary Rank in the TAMAYOUZ Competition

Both Ziad Ali and Aisha Shbib, from the fifth year of the Architecture Department, reached honorary ranks in the TAMAYOUZ Architecture Prize competition for the design of the "Iraq Pavilion at the World Expo." The design concept focused on invoking the deep history of Iraq’s ancient civilizations and the diversity of its intertwined cultural heritage, taking the visitor on a reflective journey that transcends time, guiding them through eras of glory and craftsmanship, starting from the dawn of Mesopotamian civilization to its diverse artisanal heritage.
The pavilion’s design sprawls across a wide expanse, intricately interwoven like a contemporary historical tapestry, where architectural blocks merge with gradients inspired by the construction techniques of the Sumerian and Assyrian periods, particularly the irrigation systems that acted as the lifeblood of ancient Iraq.
The pavilion draws from the spirit of the Hanging Gardens, that mythical symbol of the genius of land and water, reawakening this concept through a blend of agriculture and architecture. In every corner, Iraqi handicrafts breathe with a deep connection to a long history of pottery and sculpture, echoing ancient civilizations, pulsating with the spirit of cultural diversity that defines Iraq from its north to its south.
At the heart of this experience stands the spiral tower, piercing the space upward, symbolizing the whirlpool of events that have swept through Iraq over the centuries, as though inviting reflection on the intertwining of times and destinies. Green spaces cover the surfaces of the blocks, mirroring the Hanging Gardens that once flourished with plants, offering visitors not only a chance to interact with this heritage but to immerse themselves in it, wandering through it and becoming part of this unique experience, where the past merges with the present in a moment of deep contemplation.
The Jury's Comment on the Iraqi Pavilion Design:
"The project demonstrates a strong conceptual foundation and a thoughtful, modern approach to generating forms. The use of circular slopes to connect fragmented blocks is an ambitious and innovative gesture, contributing to the distinctive visual identity of the project. The clean and clear design reflects a rational development process and an admirable attempt to create a noteworthy urban connection, offering valuable potential for integration with its context.
While the interior spaces have been carefully developed, they could benefit from a clearer hierarchy to enhance their memorability and usability. Similarly, the circular path and central spine present interesting design movements, but further development would strengthen their functional and spatial cohesion. In fact, the visual representations of the project are particularly strong, providing a clear depiction of the concept. Even with certain objective elements, such as the Hanging Garden, potentially being realized more fully, enhancing the contextual harmony and functional clarity, the design holds the potential to become a significant architectural proposal."

It highlighted how buildings may remain ineffective—whether in terms of their elements or relationships—failing to serve their intended purpose. Due to this inactivity, buildings require adaptation to prevent deterioration and obsolescence.
The study aimed to identify the variables within adaptation systems that contribute to the activation of architectural production, ensuring the development of buildings that fulfill human needs and desires while also responding to environmental requirements. Additionally, it sought to provide a future vision for buildings with special values amid physical and intellectual transformations, aiming to achieve a balance in adapting to spatiotemporal changes.
The dissertation concentrated on key themes to derive the nature of knowledge concerning adaptation and systems, including:
- Theories related to adaptation
- Factors enabling adaptation
- Levels of adaptation (physical – intellectual)
- Formal and functional systems
- Methods of adaptation (transformation – renewal – expansion – flexibility as an attribute)

- Existential potential and dynamic change
Through practical application, the dissertation proposed a forward-looking perspective on local buildings with historical and cultural significance. It tested the theoretical framework related to the adaptation of formal and functional systems, reinforcing conceptual aspects to enhance public engagement. The study ultimately aimed to strike a balance between preserving the original essence of buildings and adapting to spatiotemporal transformations.
