Discussion of the master's thesis titled "Strategies for Pluralism in Urban Centers: A Case Study of Old Mosul."

Written by

On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the master's thesis of student Shahd Ali Dawood, titled "Strategies for Pluralism in Urban Centers: A Case Study of Old Mosul," was discussed. The thesis explored the concept of "pluralism and the comprehensive application of its strategies in urban centers," addressing the challenges of urban development in modern cities and proposing diverse solutions that do not rely solely on one strategy. The research emphasizes the holistic approach of using multiple strategies.

The study aimed to build a comprehensive theoretical framework that defines pluralism strategies (integration, collaboration, participatory aggregation, and repositioning), along with their various directions, dimensions, and indicators. It employed a mixed-methods approach, including field surveys, spatial analysis programs, mathematical equations, and descriptive analysis of the center of Old Mosul.

The findings concluded that utilizing diverse strategies in conjunction can foster actual pluralism, enhancing urban vitality and achieving sustainability and effectiveness in urban centers.

Discussion of the master's thesis titled "Digitizing Urban Spaces: An Exploratory Study Towards Interactive Urban Spaces.

Written by

On Monday, September 16, 2024, the master's thesis of student Dima Wahab Abdul Rasool, titled "Digitizing Urban Spaces: An Exploratory Study Towards Interactive Urban Spaces," was discussed. The thesis addressed the concept of "urban digitization" and its impact on creating interactive urban spaces. This includes equipping open spaces with modern digital structures supported by sensory elements (auditory, visual, kinetic, and tactile) and their influence on adapting traditional spaces to meet the demands of the digital age and its users, in line with the global trend towards smart cities. The aim is to enrich the human urban experience, create new user experiences, and enhance social interactions in innovative and creative ways.

The thesis highlighted the lack or scarcity of digital structures at the local level and the challenges faced in establishing them. The study aimed to build a theoretical framework linking the characteristics of interactive digital structures to their effect on enhancing social interactions and improving urban space, thus elevating the overall urban performance of the city.

The study employed a mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative), including surveys and questionnaires, direct interviews, and analysis of respondents' answers using statistical methods and software. The findings concluded that the presence of interactive digital structures (such as screens, floors, gates, and interactive fountains) significantly contributed to increasing urban social interactions, making users feel a sense of ownership of public space, meaning that users create their open space rather than just being spectators.

The discussion committee consisted of esteemed professors:

  • Prof. Dr. Wahda Mahmoud Shukr ………..…… Chair
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Nada Abdul-Mueen Hassan ………… Member
  • Dr. Lina Ghanem Yaqoub ……… Member
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Haider Jasim Al-Saadi ………… Member and Supervisor

We wish the researcher and all our graduate students success and prosperity.

Discussion of the master's thesis titled "Urban Topophilia: A Study of Urban Spaces within Contemporary Residential Complexes"

Written by

On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the master's thesis of student Mustafa Malik Anas was discussed. The thesis is titled "Urban Topophilia: A Study of Urban Spaces within Contemporary Residential Complexes." The thesis explored the concept of "urban topophilia" and its impact on place attachment within contemporary residential complexes.

The thesis addressed the issues of spatial disorganization and the challenges facing urban spaces in vertical residential complexes due to urban development and increasing population density. This often results in a loss of spatial values and meanings and delays in meeting human needs, negatively affecting human and social interactions. The study aimed to build a theoretical framework connecting the physical, social, and symbolic characteristics of a place to enhance attachment and satisfaction, promoting human desires and stability within the place. The study used a quantitative approach, including surveys and questionnaires, and analyzed responses using statistical methods and software. The findings indicated that integrating these spatial characteristics and their various indicators contributes to enhancing place attachment, psychological comfort, and the desire for stability and residence in vertical residential complexes.

The examination committee consisted of the following esteemed members:

  • Prof. Dr. Widad Mahmoud Shuker ………..…… Chair
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Dhurgham Mazher Al-Ubaidi ………… Member
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Nada Abdul-Ma’in Hassan ………… Member
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Haidar Jasem Al-Saadi ………… Member and Supervisor

We wish the researcher and all our graduate students success and prosperity.

Participation of Students from the Department of Architecture in the DUNES Global Competition

Written by

Students from the Department of Architecture, "Ali Ziyad" and "Aisha Shabeeb," participated in the DUNES Global Competition with a project titled "Wellness Resort in the Sinai Desert – Egypt."

The project's objective is to restore the spirit of the place by creating an immersive experience with nature, aiming to enhance overall well-being through activities that include meditation, training, work, and recreational sports.

Design Concept: The design incorporates principles of environmental design to embody the concept of "Journey Through the Sands of Time," where the desert meets the oasis, representing the womb of the harsh desert in a silent dialogue that sparks creativity in the architectural narrative. This narrative paints a captivating architectural scene that expresses harmony between the interior and exterior, telling the story of coexistence between the harshness of nature and the softness and luxury of life as a duality embraced by the design. The architectural mass is characterized by its strict geometric structure, resembling a Mexican ship with a shell that reflects the barren desert landscape and its harsh sand dunes. This bold color contrast is mirrored in the calm water surface of the oasis, creating a volume that employs natural materials like wood and palm trees, making the surfaces and levels of its spaces appear as threads of dawn in the desert, reflecting the tranquility of nature.

The environmental design focuses on creating a small city resembling a green oasis amidst a sea of sand. The project's volumes, which house its interior spaces, are interconnected, embodying a monument of unity and brotherhood. The environmental design utilizes a system of spaces and openings for ventilation, acting as the lungs of the stone structure that breathe life into the project. By studying the movement of air currents in the desert, the design creates a natural spirit that allows for the entry of light and natural ventilation, spreading light throughout the project and facilitating a coexistence experience for humans with the desert environment. This journey invites contemplation of the Creator's creativity in the vast universe.
