On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, in the Department of Architectural Engineering, master's student Shahd Majid Kazem defended her thesis titled "Designing for Life Beyond Earth: A Study on Space Habitat Design-Thinking Process." The thesis focused on space architecture and the application of the design thinking process in creating sustainable and habitable space habitats by developing a design framework that considers human needs and the unique characteristics of the space environment through theoretical analysis and practical studies of various case studies related to space habitat design.

The main goal of the thesis was to explore and develop a theoretical and practical framework for designing space habitats that can contribute to the sustainability of human life beyond Earth, emphasizing the integration of design thinking principles, such as creativity and interdisciplinary collaboration, to address the challenges posed by the harsh space environment. The findings indicated that applying the design thinking process in space habitat design significantly enhances sustainability aspects, as well as the psychological and social well-being of inhabitants, and the management of limited resources. The thesis highlighted the need for ongoing research to develop innovative solutions to future challenges in this field, focusing on interdisciplinary collaboration and continuous innovation.

On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the master's thesis of student Shahd Ali Dawood, titled "Strategies for Pluralism in Urban Centers: A Case Study of Old Mosul," was discussed. The thesis explored the concept of "pluralism and the comprehensive application of its strategies in urban centers," addressing the challenges of urban development in modern cities and proposing diverse solutions that do not rely solely on one strategy. The research emphasizes the holistic approach of using multiple strategies.

The study aimed to build a comprehensive theoretical framework that defines pluralism strategies (integration, collaboration, participatory aggregation, and repositioning), along with their various directions, dimensions, and indicators. It employed a mixed-methods approach, including field surveys, spatial analysis programs, mathematical equations, and descriptive analysis of the center of Old Mosul.

The findings concluded that utilizing diverse strategies in conjunction can foster actual pluralism, enhancing urban vitality and achieving sustainability and effectiveness in urban centers.

On Monday, September 16, 2024, the master's thesis of student Dima Wahab Abdul Rasool, titled "Digitizing Urban Spaces: An Exploratory Study Towards Interactive Urban Spaces," was discussed. The thesis addressed the concept of "urban digitization" and its impact on creating interactive urban spaces. This includes equipping open spaces with modern digital structures supported by sensory elements (auditory, visual, kinetic, and tactile) and their influence on adapting traditional spaces to meet the demands of the digital age and its users, in line with the global trend towards smart cities. The aim is to enrich the human urban experience, create new user experiences, and enhance social interactions in innovative and creative ways.

The thesis highlighted the lack or scarcity of digital structures at the local level and the challenges faced in establishing them. The study aimed to build a theoretical framework linking the characteristics of interactive digital structures to their effect on enhancing social interactions and improving urban space, thus elevating the overall urban performance of the city.

The study employed a mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative), including surveys and questionnaires, direct interviews, and analysis of respondents' answers using statistical methods and software. The findings concluded that the presence of interactive digital structures (such as screens, floors, gates, and interactive fountains) significantly contributed to increasing urban social interactions, making users feel a sense of ownership of public space, meaning that users create their open space rather than just being spectators.
