Field Visit for Third-Year Students – Urban Planning Branch

Under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Rana Mazen Mahdi and Dr. Nada Khalil, a field visit was conducted on Thursday, December 5, 2024, for third-year students of the Urban Planning branch. The visit covered the Al-Karrada district and Al-Jadriya Mall. This activity was part of the essential requirements for site analysis and aimed to identify key factors and constraints influencing the design process.

During the visit, students explored the key features of commercial centers, learning to identify essential design considerations and principles. The visit encouraged students to think critically and incorporate these insights into their project concepts.

We wish our students continued success and enriching educational experiences!

On Thursday, September 19, 2024, the master's thesis of student (Ibtihaal Ali Hussein), titled "The Impact of Self-Organization on the Adaptation of Architectural Systems," was discussed. The thesis addressed the concept of self-organization and its complexity through the variety and diversity of design characteristics, such as complexity, transformation, dynamism, and nonlinear relationships in various building patterns.

The thesis aimed to enrich the knowledge base on the impact of self-organization on the adaptation of architecture and its related aspects. It concluded that self-organization is a characteristic of adaptive chaotic systems, and the extent of the system's adaptation to internal changes reflects its flexibility. The system is responsible for initiating changes at multiple levels, including the site, space, structure, and fabric. These changes significantly improve the building’s performance, whether at the site level, through changes in space (such as changes in height, dimensions, or increasing the number of floors to meet new needs), or in the structure and fabric, which affect the building's facade, general appearance, and internal changes, along with several other positive factors.

The discussion committee consisted of the following esteemed professors:

  • Prof. Dr. Basim Hassan Al-Majdi … Chairman
  • Prof. Dr. Saad Fawzi Toma … Member
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Rana Mazen Mahdi … Member
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Uday Abbas Aboud … Member and Supervisor

We wish the researcher and all our graduate students success and good luck.

On Thursday, November 13, 2024, the doctoral thesis of researcher (Seba Mujtaba Abdul Wahid), titled "Urban Competitiveness," was discussed. The thesis explores the concept of urban competitiveness as a central framework to support the development of cities and enhance their ability to adapt to contemporary changes, with a focus on urban intelligence as a key factor in improving the performance of residential neighborhoods. The study concentrated on developing an integrated model for competitive performance based on three main dimensions: productivity, efficiency, and quality, with urban intelligence being the primary driver for achieving this integration.

The study concluded that enhancing urban intelligence contributes to the development of residential neighborhoods, transforming them into integrated environments that meet the needs of residents and increase their attractiveness for investment and development. The researcher recommended applying innovative urban designs based on smart technologies to support economic activities, improve resource efficiency, and raise the standard of living for residents, with an emphasis on building interactive and sustainable communities.

The thesis highlights the importance of smart residential neighborhoods as a key tool for developing modern cities and achieving sustainable competitiveness on both local and international levels.
