Assistant Professor Dr. Zainab Hussein Raouf in the Department of Architectural Engineering
participated On Thursday 26 October, 2023 in the discussion of the master’s thesis entitled
“The Urban Footprint of Baghdad” by the student (Asawir Abdel Rahman Abbas), The discussion
was held at Al-Nahrain University - Department of Architecture Engineering.
The thesis focused on the absence of the urban footprint concept and its impact on the urban
landscape, specifically the city of Baghdad. The thesis aimed to explore the relationship between
urban footprint and identity within their role in designing distinctive, non-copied cities.
The research concluded with the concept of the close connection between urban footprint and
identity in terms of the characteristics, landmarks, and physical and cultural infrastructure.

The Student ((Mona Muhammad Taqi))) at the Department of Architecture has been granted a
master's degree in Architecture on her thesis titled “Strategic Tactics In The Ecology Of
Contemporary Urban Agglomeration: Al-Harithiya District As A Case Study”
The discussion was held on Tuesday, October 26, 2023,, in the Department of Architectural
Engineering at the University of Technology.
The thesis focused on the concept of urban agglomeration and the analysis of all functional
and morphological aspects to present the most important indicators of regular agglomeration
and to determine the causes of irregular agglomeration witnessed in urban areas.
The research aimed to find the correct specifications and characteristics of agglomeration in
accordance with contemporary urban transformations by adopting the ecological aspect in
urban tactics and developing self-sustainable urban agglomerations to achieve a sustainable
and contemporary urban environment.
.
The study concluded that dynamic agglomeration, using inversion tactics, preserves the
spatial character, that using tactics creates a spatial relationship with the original configuration
of the place, that transformation tactics that are based primarily on increasing the net density
(housing) transform the spaces into blocks, through that, functions in the environment can be
adjusted in a way that preserves their privacy and achieves aspects of sustainability.

The Student ((Hassan Ali Hassouni)) at the Department of Architecture has been
granted a master's degree in Architecture on his thesis titled“The role of the digital
twin in public buildings managing -controlling the spread of viruses in public buildings”
The discussion was held on Tuesday, August 1, 2023,, in the Department of
Architectural Engineering at the University of Technology.

The thesis focused on the concept of the Digital Twin in architecture and reviewed the
latest developments and studies related to the creation of the digital twin and the
current global challenges related to epidemics, especially the COVID-19 pandemic, and
how to confront these challenges through the digital twin.
The study aimed at presenting mechanisms for applying the digital twin in managing
the pandemic and controlling the viral spread within public buildings, The research
concluded that it is possible to achieve a safe and healthy indoor environment by

bridging the gap between architecture and humans using the digital twin, through
interventions (engineering, administrative, and personal controls) and mechanisms
that work to reduce the transmission of infection and protect the health of
individuals.

Within our department’s participation in international scientific activities , Dr.
Yihya Adel Ibrahim, one of the faculty member in the department of architecture
engineering participated as one of the trainers in the international workshop
(Liveable Passive Intelligent Cities) organized in Amman by BrightonUniversity
(United Kingdom) and Petra University (Jordan) under the auspices of (British
Council).
The workshop aims to train a new generation of researchers in urban
sustainability issues in addition to sustainable development, energy efficiency,
and the environmental impact of buildings , the methods analysis development
and problem identification with a special focus on developing countries in order to
spread the culture of the importance of sustainable design and strategies for
energy conservation. Dr.Yahya Adel Ibrahim submitted his lecture entitled:”

Sustainable Building Design: Integrated Façade Systems “His experience in this
field is a part of his doctoral study entitled “Integrated Façade Systems for
Highly- to Fully Glazed Office Buildings in Hot and Arid Climates”
He also reviewed a summary of his research in this field to benefit from and
disseminate it in countries with similar and different climatic regions.
The workshop concluded with honoring the trainers with a certificate of
appreciation.
Name of the workshop:: Liveable Passive Intelligent Cities
Organizers of the workshop: 1- University of Brighton (United Kingdom)
2- University of Petra (Jordan)
Workshop sponsor: British Council
Delegate Role: Mentor Trainer
Number of participating trainers: 4 (1 from Iraq, 3 from the United Kingdom)
Number of trainees: 18 from the United Kingdom and 18 from Jordan
Workshop goals:
-Creating a network of researchers across different disciplines in architecture who have
the same scientific and research interests.
