Discussion of the Doctoral Dissertation Titled:
"Generativity in Architecture: A Study of the Concept of Generativity and Reproduction as a Strategy for Organizing Architectural Practice"

On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the doctoral dissertation of researcher Noura Nassif Jassim, titled "Generativity in Architecture: A Study of the Concept of Generativity and Reproduction as a Strategy for Organizing Architectural Practice," was discussed.

The dissertation focused on exploring generativity and reproduction as strategies to organize architectural practice and examined how these concepts can renew and advance architectural methodologies. The research originated from the vital role architecture plays in shaping the built environment, which in turn influences societal interactions. The study identified a research gap related to the lack of clear knowledge about generativity as an ideal strategic approach for architectural production, innovation, and the preservation of local cultural identity within architectural practice.

The research analyzed the relationship between generativity, social practice, and influential theories, as well as the interaction between micro, meso, and macro levels of architectural practice. The goal was to bridge this knowledge gap to improve the quality and consistency of architectural outputs and enhance the overall efficiency of the architectural design process. The study underscored the potential of generativity to provide a comprehensive roadmap for architectural practice.

The dissertation revealed the influence of generativity on architectural work, thought, and existence, linking it to various stages of architectural practice. The key methodologies of generativity outlined include:

  1. Generativity of Architect's Perceptions
  2. Material Embodiment of Ideas and Relationships
  3. Patterning, Molding, and Prototyping
  4. Cultural Generativity

The study recommended adopting generative strategies as a fundamental methodology in architectural practice to achieve excellence in design, execution, and project management. It also proposed developing organizational frameworks to integrate generativity within architectural firms and institutions, and enhancing research and education on generative applications in architecture.
